On 10^th July 2018, Yang Shun Kai, a postgraduate student from the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, won the prize of Best Oral Presenter in the 3^rd ASEAN Congress on Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Biosciences (ACMBMB), 2018.

The competition was participated by representatives from various local and international universities across ASEAN. ACMBMB is an annual joint event organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia together with Mahidol University (Thailand), Universitas Padjajaran (Indonesia) and University of the Philippines (Philippines) and was held at The Gurney Resort Hotel and Residences, Penang, Malaysia.

Yang Shun Kai won the prize by presenting part of his PhD project entitled “Mode of action of cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum verum) essential oil and the combinatory bactericidal activity with meropenem against KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae”. He currently works with multidrug-resistant pathogens under the supervision of Dr. Lai Kok Song. He hopes to mitigate the antibiotic resistance issue by discovering novel antimicrobials from natural products.
