Nanobiotechnology combines the fields of biotechnology and nanoscience. It involves the study of biomolecules from cells such as proteins and nucleic acids to fabricate functional nanostructures. This new technology has a wide range of applications which include medical implants, microelectronic silicon substrates, biosensors, diagnostic tools, drug delivery particles, transducers, amplifiers, nanomechanics and computing. In the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UPM, we have successfully delivered cargo into mammalian cells by using nanoparticles derived from hepatitis B virus and filamentous bacteriophages.
